Governor Pavlovich in isolation
Sonora’s Secretary of Health Enrique Clausen announced yesterday that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. And Governor Claudia Pavlovich, who works in close contact with Clausen, has put herself in self-isolation and will be tested in the coming days.
Clausen has been the face of the government efforts against the virus, providing COVID-related press conferences and hosting the nightly COVID-19 updates.
Arizona-Sonora COVID infections
Sonora is continuing up a steep curve of new daily infections, with 9386 confirmed cases, about 10 percent of Arizona’s current total of 91,858 new daily cases.
And so far, COVID-19 has been far more deadly in Sonora than it is in Arizona. North of the border, Arizona has tallied 1788 coronavirus-related deaths, about two percent of all confirmed cases. But Sonora’s 950 deaths represent more than 10 percent of those confirmed with the virus.
3 municipalities have two-thirds of cases in Sonora
The municipality of Hermosillo has 3125 cases, the highest number of any Sonora municipality and nearly one-third of the state’s total cases.
Hermosillo is followed by Cajeme (Ciudad Obregon) with 1773 confirmed cases, and Nogales, with 1430 cases. Those top three have nearly 70 percent of Sonora’s total confirmed cases.
Rounding out the top five are San Luis Rio Colorado (930 cases) and Navojoa (451 cases).
