Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich met with Germany’s ambassador to Mexico Peter Temple yesterday in Hermosillo to discuss the strength of relations between Germany and Sonora.
Governor Pavlovich, who made a state visit to Germany two years ago, wants to increase cooperative efforts between the two entities.
She mentioned three areas of focus in particular: education, economic development and the environment.
Both Tempel and Pavlovich praised the recently signed USMCA treaty and the opportunities it presents for economic connections between Sonora and Arizona.
In that context Pavlovich stressed the advantage of Sonorans receiving training and jobs in any German factories that are located in Sonora.
And Tempel acknowledged the opportunity for German aerospace and renewable energy manufacturing in the state.
Sonora’s fledgling aerospace sector accounts for 5 percent of the state’s gross domestic product and employs approximately 10,000 workers, according to the office of Sonora’s secretary of the economy.
A joint German-Mexican effort, AT Engine, will begin constructing parts for new-generation aircraft turbines and rocket components this October in Hermosillo.
Tempel stressed that Mexico is an important friend of Germany, and that his country wants to continue to build relationships between Mexico and Germany.
He also praised Sonora’s policy for international business, saying that Sonora is “an important state that has a lot to offer.”
Also present in the meeting were:
Natalia Rivera Grijalva, head of the State Executive Office
Jorge Vidal Ahumada, Secretary of Economy
Ricardo Martínez Terrazas, Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Development
José Víctor Guerrero González, Secretary of Education and Culture
Yamilett Martínez Briseño, director of the Office of Liaison and International Cooperation of the State Government
