Australian Mining Giant South32 Zinc Exports to Route Hermosa Project Output Through Sonora

Port of Guaymas Project Strengthens Arizona-Sonora Supply Chain

Sonora newspaper El Imparcial reports that state and federal efforts to modernize and expand the Port of Guaymas have resulted in a major cross-border logistics win, with Australian mining company South32 planning to route zinc production from its Hermosa Project in southern Arizona through Sonora’s upgraded port facilities.

Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed that the company is preparing to formalize the arrangement through a memorandum of understanding, positioning Guaymas as a strategic export hub for critical minerals.

The investment tied to the broader project is estimated at 130 billion pesos, marking one of the most significant mining-linked logistics developments in the region.

A Cross-Border Industrial Integration Move

South32’s Hermosa Project is considered one of the most advanced mining developments in North America and is currently the only advanced U.S. project focused on producing minerals critical to the energy transition, including zinc, manganese, silver, and lead.

By selecting Guaymas as its export point, the company reinforces the Arizona-Sonora industrial corridor and reduces reliance on longer or more congested supply routes.

Governor Durazo emphasized that this decision reflects the strategic goals of the Plan Sonora for Sustainable Energy, which seeks to leverage infrastructure to catalyze regional development.

“They have decided to mobilize zinc production through the Port of Guaymas,” Durazo stated. “It is excellent news for our state.”

Why Guaymas Matters

The Port of Guaymas is undergoing comprehensive modernization under a federal expansion project announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum. Improvements include expanded cargo handling capacity, modernized logistics infrastructure, increased mineral export capability, and enhanced maritime connectivity.

For Sonora, the move reinforces Guaymas as a Pacific gateway for critical minerals, a logistics bridge between Arizona mining and global markets, and a key node in North American supply chain resilience.

Strategic Implications for North America

The Hermosa Project’s minerals are essential for energy storage systems, electrification infrastructure, renewable energy technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

By routing exports through Sonora rather than U.S. coastal ports alone, the integration strengthens regional economic interdependence, industrial cost efficiency, and cross-border collaboration under USMCA while reducing infrastructure redundancy.

This development aligns directly with the emerging binational strategy on critical minerals, further embedding Sonora into North America’s energy transition supply network.

South32

South32 is a diversified global mining company headquartered in Australia. Its Hermosa Project in Arizona represents a flagship U.S. development in energy-transition minerals.

With Guaymas as its export platform, Sonora transitions from mineral producer to logistics integrator within the continental value chain.
