Port of Guaymas Positioned as a Key Logistics Hub for Mexico and North America

The Port of Guaymas is taking a major step toward becoming one of Mexico’s and North America’s most important logistics hubs through a new strategic alliance with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, one of the world’s most advanced logistics centers.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said the agreement aligns directly with the Plan Sonora for Sustainable Energy, which aims to integrate the state into next-generation global industries such as electromobility, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and data centers. The European Commission has recognized the partnership as a flagship project, making Sonora the first Mexican state to establish direct cooperation with the European Union to transform a port toward a net-zero emissions model.

The federal government of Mexico has invested more than 4 billion pesos in the modernization of the Port of Guaymas, including expanded cargo yards, upgraded rail infrastructure, and increased operational capacity. Officials say the transformation will improve efficiency, lower logistics costs, and strengthen Guaymas’ integration into North American and global supply chains.

The Sonora–Antwerp-Bruges partnership includes the development of a master logistics plan focused on clean energy operations, international security standards, and enhanced capacity for strategic minerals, containerized cargo, and vehicle transport. European Commission representatives highlighted the project’s potential to create jobs, boost regional trade, and support low-carbon economic growth.
