Contact with Chinese government and investors
Puerto Peñasco municipal alcalde (mayor) Kiko Munro presented the potential for investment in that city at an initial December 2019 meeting with Yo Bo, the general consul of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Tijuana, Baja California.
And according to published reports, following their initial meeting Munro maintains contact with the Tijuana consulate and has also met with representatives of the Synergetic Innovation Fund Management Co., Ltd. SynCapital to further explore opportunities for Chinese and other international investments.
SynCapital is a company that manages investment funds, led by the well-known Chinese investor Dr. Wanshou Li.
Increased economic diversity
In addition to Peñasco’s current base of tourism and real estate development, Munro has plans to expand and diversify the city’s economic infrastructure to take advantage of its safe, seaside location.
Potential projects include a new seaside location for cruises, a specialty hospital, an industrial park, seafood processing operations and a deep-water seaport to make Puerto Peñasco a hub for international shipping.
Other Chinese investment opportunities
According to a story by UniRadio Noticias, Chinese representatives have also visited other points in Sonora and are confident that their visits will yield positive results, as early as this year.
And as a potential indicator of Chinese interest in the state, B.R. Waldon, the publisher of the Explore-Sonora reports that so far this month nearly 30 percent of traffic to the website has been from Chinese visitors, and there has also been an increase in other Sonora-themed web pages.
