Navojoa Bypass Project to Strengthen Mexico–U.S. Trade and Regional Connectivity

Construction has officially begun on the Navojoa Bypass (Libramiento Navojoa), a major infrastructure project aimed at improving transportation efficiency, strengthening regional commerce, and removing heavy freight traffic from the city’s urban core.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño launched the project during a working visit to southern Sonora, confirming an investment of 1.5 billion pesos in the 22.7-kilometer roadway.

The bypass is designed to redirect heavy cargo traffic away from Navojoa’s main streets, responding to a long-standing request from residents and businesses.

“This project responds to a historic demand from the community to free the city’s main roads from heavy cargo transport,” Durazo said during the announcement.

Improving Trade Connectivity

The new corridor is expected to carry approximately 3,000 vehicles per day, about half of them heavy freight trucks, significantly improving mobility and travel times across the region.

The project is part of the infrastructure component of the Plan Sonora for Sustainable Energy, a broader strategy aimed at strengthening economic development and facilitating cross-border trade between Mexico and the United States.

Durazo emphasized that modern infrastructure plays a key role in improving the efficiency of international commerce.

“Passing through the center of a city is not the same as using a dedicated bypass designed for freight movement,” he noted.

Additional Investments in Navojoa

During the visit, the governor also delivered 16.25 million pesos in equipment to the municipality of Navojoa to support public works and agricultural operations.

The machinery package includes backhoes, dump trucks, agricultural tractors, a front loader, and mowing, cutting, leveling, and cultivation equipment.

New Primary School Opens

Durazo also inaugurated the Fundación Nissan New Creation Primary School, a facility donated through a collaboration between the private sector and government, intended to support educational development in the region.
