Gildan to close two Sonora factories
December 17, 2019
Canadian company Gildan Activewear Inc. has announced that it will close two of its Sonora manufacturing facilities. Gildan plants in Agua Prieta and Hermosillo will be idled by the end of April 2020.
Gildan produces activewear like fleece pullovers and athletic shirts, and undergarments such as t-shirts and underwear.
The move will idle approximately 1,000 employees in the border town of Agua Prieta and 600 in the Sonora state capital of Hermosillo.
Workers interviewed by Sonora newspaper El Imparcial commented that they were accustomed to having a good salary.
One Gildan employee mentioned that he finds the situation to be particularly difficult because it will be hard to find similar or better work in the Agua Prieta area.
