Sonora Reaches Record Export Growth, Leads Northern Border States
The state of Sonora has emerged as a leading export economy along Mexico’s northern border, reaching record-breaking levels in 2025 and posting the region’s highest growth rate.
Governor Alfonso Durazo reported that, according to INEGI, Sonora recorded a 9.1% increase in exports during the first four months of 2025, the strongest performance among northern border states.
Record Export Performance
On an annual basis, Sonora reached a historic milestone of $28.61 billion USD in exports in 2025, up significantly from $20.19 billion USD in 2021. This growth reflects a sustained expansion over the past four years, positioning Sonora as a key contributor to Mexico’s export economy.
Key Sectors Driving Growth
The increase in exports has been driven by strong performance across multiple sectors, notably agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. Those industries have benefited from ongoing investment and industrial development across the state.
Role of the Plan Sonora Initiative
Officials attribute part of this growth to the Plan Sonora de Energías Sostenibles, which has accelerated industrialization and supported infrastructure development. The initiative aims to align energy production, manufacturing expansion, and regional economic growth, helping position Sonora as a competitive export hub.
A Growing Export Economy
State leadership emphasized that the increase in exports reflects broader economic strengthening, with Sonora now recognized as a regional leader in export growth, a national reference in key productive sectors, and a state with increasing integration into global supply chains.
Summary
Sonora’s record export performance highlights its growing role in cross-border trade and industrial development, supported by strategic investment and sector diversification.
