Sonora Announces $10.3 Billion Peso Investment in Roads and Health Infrastructure

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño announced a 10.285 billion peso (about $600 million) infrastructure investment for 2026 focused on highway improvements, regional connectivity, and a new public hospital project.

The funding, that was drawn from federal, state, and private sources, will support several key transportation projects across the state. Planned investments include improvements to major regional highways such as the Bahía de Kino road expansion, upgrades to the Ímuris-Cananea corridor, rehabilitation of the Sonoyta-Puerto Peñasco highway, and construction of rural artisan roadways that improve access for smaller communities.

Specific allocations include 500 million pesos for improvements to the road connecting Hermosillo and Bahía de Kino, 800 million pesos for the Nogales bypass highway, 362 million pesos for maintenance of existing roadways, and 106 million pesos for rural and artisan road projects.

Durazo also confirmed plans for the construction of a new hospital in Ures, with 500 million pesos allocated for the project. The hospital is expected to operate under the federal health system IMSS-Bienestar once land ownership issues are resolved.

In addition to infrastructure announcements, the governor noted that political differences among allied parties over an upcoming electoral reform vote do not threaten the governing coalition, emphasizing that parties retain autonomy to vote independently in Congress.

Durazo also announced celebrations for the anniversary of Parque La Sauceda, scheduled for March 20-22, which will include the opening of new recreational amenities such as a jogging track, boating area, and sports courts as part of ongoing efforts to restore the historic park as a permanent public space.
