Hermosillo Leads Mexico’s State Capitals in Formal Job Creation
Hermosillo has emerged as the leading state capital in Mexico for formal job creation in early 2026, according to data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). During the first two months of the year, the city generated 9,255 new formal jobs, placing it ahead of other major state capitals across the country.
Óscar Gastélum Donnadieu, director of the Hermosillo Municipal Economic Development Agency (AMDE), said the figures highlight the city’s strong economic momentum and expanding employment opportunities for residents.
Among state capitals, Hermosillo ranked first in job creation, followed by Saltillo, Coahuila: 5,393 new jobs; Mexicali, Baja California: 5,012 new jobs; and Chihuahua, Chihuahua: smaller but notable growth.
Local officials attribute the increase primarily to growth in agro-industry, manufacturing, and service sectors, which continue to strengthen Hermosillo’s role as an important economic hub in northern Mexico.
February alone saw 8,326 new formal jobs registered with IMSS, marking the highest number recorded for the first two months of the year since employment tracking began.
City leaders say the municipal government plans to continue promoting economic development programs, infrastructure projects, and investment initiatives aimed at sustaining job growth and expanding stable employment opportunities for Hermosillo residents.
