Puerto Peñasco Solar Plant to Power 250,000 Homes in Sonora
The Puerto Peñasco solar power plant is advancing as one of Mexico’s largest clean energy projects and is expected to supply electricity to approximately 250,000 homes in Sonora, according to Governor Alfonso Durazo.
The project is part of the Plan Sonora for Sustainable Energy and is receiving a $347 million USD federal investment for its third development phase. Once operational, the new phase will add up to 300 megawatts of installed capacity and is projected to reduce between 1 million and 1.4 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
State officials say the project will strengthen Sonora’s role in Mexico’s energy transition while promoting economic development, sustainability, and energy equity for households across the state. The solar plant’s next phase is scheduled to begin operations in July 2027.
Durazo credited the federal government and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) for supporting the project, which positions Sonora as a national leader in renewable energy generation.
